Mike Matton is head of international R&D collaborations at VRT Innovation. He holds a Master in Informatics and Artificial Intelligence from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He obtained his Ph.D. in computer science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 2009. His Ph.D. research involved example based methods for speech and pattern recognition.
In 2009, Mike joined the R&D labs of VRT, where he focused on applying artificial intelligence techniques in the media domain, as well as methods for managing metadata, including metadata models. He has been involved in several European and national projects and is currently the coordinator of the Horizon2020 MARCONI project. Mike is currently leading the international R&D collaborations at VRT.
In addition, Mike is chair of the expert group on automated information extraction within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and steering board member of the EBU strategic programme on media information management. As of 2016, he is also a member of the NEM Steering Board, and in 2018, he was elected as vice chair for media industry engagement.
