VRT and EDI launch new big data challenges for startups and SMEs

The European project EDI and VRT launch for the third consecutive year new challenges. EDI is a fund of 5 million euros in total to help grow data economy throughout Europe. The 8 months lasting program already hosted 80 startups and SMEs that received growing opportunities and gave them a chance to receive financing up to 100,000 euros as well. 

 

What is EDI?

EDI is an incubation programme, run by 20 partners across Europe, among which VRT, that gives startups and SMEs the chance to grow their business. Therefore, each year EDI offers real-life challenges from European corporates in different sectors. The call this year will be the third consecutive one. With the help of up to €100K equity-free funding and a dedicated coach, the programme takes startups through 3 intense phases of growth over eight months. During that period, they are able to participate in different workshops and trainings, meet other European startups working on big data, and gain access to tools and sets of data to improve their product or service.

Until the 17th of June, startups and SMEs can apply by proposing their own challenge, with or without using an EDI data set, or solve an existing challenge. As one of the project partners, VRT has defined two different challenges for startups:

  • Automatic Chaptering of Video Content
    VRT produces a large amount of content on a daily basis, ranging from radio content to news articles to video content. One of the main challenges related to this is making that content easily retrievable, both for the media user and for our editing teams. In this context, chaptering of news bulletins, but also other programs, is often performed related to which topic was discussed. Thus, editing teams can easily retrieve parts of interest in a longer episode in order to reuse content for social media posts or making snippets available on video on demand services like VRT NU or podcast services. Typically, metadata representing which topics were discussed in a certain recording is used to achieve this. VRT is looking for partners to automate this process. 

 

  • Facial and Gender Recognition on Video Content
    Due to the sheer amount of content that VRT produces on a daily basis one of the main challenges related to this is making sure that the content is given useful tags efficiently, both for the media user and for our editing teams. Typically, metadata is used to achieve this, for example program titles, content genre and other types of tags. Specifically for video, our news team is interested in the automatic metadata generation concerning the experts and interviewees that are part of our daily news bulletin as well as how long they were present on screen. This will give VRT a chance to better balance which experts are invited for our shows based on their gender, sex and ethnicity. Data that will be produced automatically based on recognition.
